Vice Principal of Instruction:
Notre Dame High School, a Catholic college preparatory school sponsored by the Brothers of the Congregation of Holy Cross educates the hearts and minds of students who are diverse in ethnicity, talent, and culture. As a community of faith, Notre Dame strives to form each student spiritually, intellectually, and socially to recognize the dignity of all persons and to serve the evolving needs of the world. DESCRIPTION OF POSITION:
The Vice Principal of Instruction is a twelve-month, exempt position reporting to the Principal. The position begins July 1 and ends June 30 each year with work hours set at roughly 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The position requires significant extended hours, nights, and weekend work and attendance or travel for school activities (i.e. games, dances, arts, admissions and advancement events, Holy Cross Mission programs, etc.)
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Works collaboratively with other members of the school administration including, but not limited to the President, Principal, Vice Principal of Academic Affairs, Director of Diversity Equity and Inclusion, and Director of Campus Ministry to implement the school’s mission.
  • Assists the administrative team in the daily operation of the school (i.e. morning walk-arounds, lunch duty and assembly supervision, discipline board, x period walk-arounds) and including a significant number of evening and weekend school events (i.e. chaperone dances, attendance at games and other school events, etc.)
  • Assists Principal and the Vice Principal of Academic Affairs in the supervision, observation, and evaluation of faculty.
  • Work with the Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion to assist faculty in developing culturally responsive curriculum modules to strengthen curricular and instructional expertise and to advance educational equity.
  • Partners with Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, Director of Campus Ministry and Department Chairs to ensure that culturally responsive curriculum modules are integrated throughout the curriculum with an emphasis on Catholic social teaching and social justice standards.
  • Analyzes and utilizes student academic data (e.g., WCEA Accreditation data, Admissions Data, and standardized testing data) for the purpose of developing or co-developing appropriate curriculum and guiding instructional conversations.
  • Supervises and meets regularly with Department Chairs for curriculum oversight utilizing the support of the Lead Department Chair, as needed, to assist with the following:
    • Chairs and schedules the monthly Academic Council meeting; develops agenda, distributes agenda and minutes.
    • Revises the Department Chair Handbook and ensures that Department Chairs have updated Department handbooks.
    • Partners with Department Chairs to develop curriculum, maintain curriculum maps, and review on-line Gradebooks as needed.
    • Oversees content standards and course standardization.
    • Supervises the school Librarian and ensures that library services are coordinated with curriculum and instructional needs.
    • Works with Department Chairs and Director of Communications to maintain and post list of required books and applications for the school year and summer school.
    • Oversees co-curricular programs such as Band, Debate, Theatre and Yearbook.
    • Partners with Technology office to advise on the implementation of new technology for curriculum and instruction.
    • Supervises faculty in conjunction with Department Chairs, handling parent and student concerns according to outlined procedures.
    • Works with academic department chairs on corrective actions and performance improvement plans for teachers as needed.
    • Analyzes standardized testing data (PSAT, SAT, AP scores) with the Principal and Vice Principal of Academic Affairs and shares them with Department Chairs and faculty.
    • Plans and chairs all faculty meetings and school-wide professional growth opportunities for faculty, including August and June meetings.
    • Coordinates Back to School Night.
    • Coordinates Parent-Teacher Conferences.
    • Coordinates the final exam schedule and make-up exams.
    • Partners with the Principal in developing year-end summative for Department Chairs.
    • Partners with Principal and Department Chairs in observing faculty, and supports Department Chairs in developing faculty year-end summative.
    • Oversees department budgets (monitors credit cards and signs check requests).
    • Support Department Chairs in monitoring faculty use of Canvas and X-period logs.
    • Works with Vice Principal of Academic Affairs to review grade statistic reports and shares them with Department Chairs.
    • Assists Department Chairs in approving guest speakers, field trips, and the use of full length movies in class.
    • Coordinates AP informational meetings for students and parents, and schedules and posts AP Review schedule.
    • Works with Principal, Director of Human Resources, and Business Office to coordinate the recruitment, hiring, supervision, and retention of faculty.
    • Coordinates interviews and teaching demonstrations.
    • Plans and oversees August new faculty orientation.
    • Mentors new faculty through monthly new faculty meetings.
    • Assists Director of Human Resources as needed in updating the Faculty Handbook.
    • Oversees faculty professional growth program, and approves professional development payment requests.
    • Supports Department Chairs in coordinating long-term substitution needs.
    • Oversees main office personnel in coordinating substitutions.
    • Manages and approves faculty attendance.
    • Assists the Principal and Vice Principal of Academic Affairs to insure that Notre Dame’s graduation. requirements are in line with college admissions requirements.
    • Coordinates X period tutoring rooms.
    • Works with the technology office and Director of Educational Technology to define, monitor, and implement technology use in the classroom.
    • Supports the Admissions Office in recruitment, admissions, and financial aid.
    • Participates as needed in visit days, articulation dinner, HSPT, Open House, interviews, school visits, honors dinner, registration day.
    • Serves as a member of the admissions committee.
    • Serves on the financial aid committee.
    • Analyzes admissions data with principal and admissions team.
    • Assists Principal, Vice Principal of Academic Affairs and admissions team in scheduling incoming freshmen into honors and/or summer bridge courses.
    • Implements the recommendations of WASC/WCEA in coordination with the President and Principa
    • Coordinates the on-going WASC/WCEA process.
    • Maintains WCEA Data Library.
    • Implements the EIP through faculty committees and assists Principal in preparing annual, 18 month, and/or mid cycle reports.
    • Prepares the school community for the next WASC/WCEA evaluation.
    • Supports the Director of Summer Knights in organizing and directing the 5th-12th grade summer school program.
    • Works with the Principal, Department Chairs, Admissions Team, and Director of Summer Knights to develop courses.
    • Assists Director of Summer Knights in preparing contracts for summer school faculty in conjunction with the business office.
    • Attends Archdiocesan and other off-campus meetings as needed.
EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Practicing Catholic who is an active member of their parish faith community is strongly preferred. 
  • An advanced degree in a related field is required. 
  • A minimum of five (5) years experience in teaching and/or administration at the secondary level.
  • Excellent teaching, classroom management, communication, and organization skills and proven experience mentoring other faculty.
  • High-level of familiarity and competence across cultures and multiple perspectives and a strong commitment to initiatives that support diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Knowledgeable in current research, designing culturally responsive curriculum and instruction, coaching for equity, and understanding the complexities of educational equity.
  • Demonstrated skill and experience with utilizing culturally responsive curriculum and instruction and effective pedagogical approaches.
  • Competency in technology skills and use of education technology, and a desire to keep learning and mentoring other faculty.
  • Willingness to collaborate, innovate, problem solve, and share best practices with colleagues.
  • Ability to multitask and exhibit excellent time management and efficiency in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • Exhibit a personality that demonstrates enthusiasm and possess interpersonal skills that relate well with students, staff, administration, parents, and the outside community.
